ARTISTIK TERRACOTTA

TERRACOTTA PRODUCT


In the past, Kasongan was also a center of ceramic or terracotta product for different product. The village use to produce kitchen utensil like pot, stove, flower pot, water container, piggy bank, and other simple terracotta items. The production method and its design were still very simple, plain, and was not yet touched sense of art. Kasongan emerge as the craft village, especially for terracotta product, after getting the ‘magic’ touch of the late Saptohudoyo, a famous artist from Yogyakarta. The touch of Sapto art could little by little polish the product Kasongan ceramic to become the work of art that continued to develop up to the present.

TRADITIONAL TERRACOTTA


The fame of Kasongan has developed from traditional terracotta home utensil producer to the craft village which attracts many people not only from Indonesia but also from all over the world. The product of the craft village is not plain and monotonous anymore. The villagers are now busy producing orders from some foreign countries in various designs in many different size and shape according to the order.

The quality of ceramic products can compete with the ceramic product from other countries indicated by the increasing number of the products exported. The role of the Provincial Government for the development of Kasongan Craft village is also significant. Some training for the villagers, Promotion, export opportunity, and providing sufficient infrastructure smoothen the popularity of Kasongan.

TOURIST VILLAGE


Kasongan is, now, becoming a Tourist Village for the village is one of the tourist destination in Yogyakarta. Tourists either domestic or foreign come to the village to admire and purchase the craft product. That is why Kasongan Product can penetrate the international market like European countries, America, Asia even Africa.

PRICE OF PRODUCT


The design and the product that was made vary increasingly from the big measurement jug with the price of hundreds of thousands Rupiah to the simple ashtray for only one thousand Rupiah. The fast growth of the production, of course, increases the life of the villagers economically. So that it can not be ignored that their creativity to produce products and the innovative design sharpened as the time run. They can recognize the taste of the domestic and foreign tourist for the product. If domestic tourists tend to prefer striking collour for the finishing of the product, the foreigner likes the natural colour better.

DRY FLOWERS


The display space that used to be the front yard of their houses or on their veranda is now totally changed. Most of the houses in Kasongan village are now “Show Rooms” for craft product. Dry flowers, some kind or roots, rope, even leather are now becoming additional material that beautifies the product. Imitation of Asmat statue can also be found among the product.

BIG EARTHQUAKE


When the big earthquake shook Jogja last May 2006, indeed Kasongan was also badly ruined. However, the disaster could not stop the spirit of the villagers to keep their village as the craft and tourist village of Jogja. With the remnant of their belonging they started building their factories and showrooms show that the life of Kasongan Craft village began to continue to maintain its existence.
